Comment:
PA has breakdowns of specific types of instruction for each of these. We can use OtherCode for them, I think. There is also a breakdown of the type of activities, and some are indirect – like Professional Development for staff, improving curricula and instruction strategies, and community programs / services. I suspect at some point we need to identify these indirect services at the school or LEA level rather than at the student level, but I’m not sure of the best strategy for that.
Response:
Actually, I think that the specific types of instruction provided to a student under one of these programs should be identified in the StudentPlacement object – each instance of that object can be used to identify a specific service.
“Indirect” service when used in the special education context means a consulting service provided to one of the student’s teachers or related service providers to help that person instruct that student more effectively. Professional development, improvement of curricula, etc. that are provided at a general level without reference to a particular student are outside of the realm of StudentParticipation and StudentPlacement. I agree – I think that those programs and their related funding are eventually going to need to be identified and supported. Conversations with HR / Finance and with Professional Development groups may be the next step there.
